2021.10.28 02:38 SYTOkun Retroactive Canon: Or why is "X was always planned to be Y" such a common excuse in RWBY?

To explain in the context of RWBY: Retroactive Canon is the idea that canon ideas in RWBY are not decided from the start, but are changed on the fly and said to be true by the creators afterward. It's usually called a RetCon (Retroactive Continuity) where past events are rewritten in a different context to fit the newer plot.
This tends to happen in many works simply as a natural process of writing. Sometimes ideas change partway through production and some details don't really work out anymore, so you explain the old idea in a different context so that it fits the new story. For example, you want to bring back a person who was originally dead in your story. You can Retcon this by having them explain "I faked my own death" or "They never found my body".
However, it is only in the RWBY community that I notice such a willingness on fans' part to not only say that RWBY's writers don't retcon their story, but to say it was always written that way from the start.
Example 1: "Ironwood was always planned to be a dictator" We'll use Ironwood, as he's the most recent example. It's true that Ironwood was very deliberately written to be a morally grey or antagonistic character from his very first scene alone. His methods constantly go against Ozpin's, and Ironwood constantly argues with Ozpin about what's the best way to combat the Grimm (and as we eventually learn, Salem). We knew he would at least be someone who would become an obstacle for Team RWBY down the line.
However, he was clearly written to be a general whose convictions will lead him to stubbornness and headstrong, militaristic decisions. He was not written to be genocidal, nor even particularly inclined to killing people. He uses robot soldiers in V2-3 to lessen human casualties on the field, which makes lots of sense given his own body being nearly destroyed in war, and even up till V7, he decides to arrest Watts, a dangerous enemy and servant of Salem, instead of killing him.
So then, when viewers were presented with the Ironwood in V8, whose dark turn involved acts like shooting an Atlas councilman, killing Jacques for little reason other than annoyance, and planning to nuke Mantle, many fans saw this as out of character for James. Others disagree and said that given his paranoia and desperation, they can see it happening.
But for another subset of fans, they're willing to go to the length of saying something like "Ironwood was always evil (as in, a genocidal dictator). You just didn't catch the foreshadowing".
The problem here is not that It's saying that Ironwood was always intended to be an antagonist (this was established well), or Ironwood was someone who would stop at nothing to do what he considered right (also established well), but specifically the idea that "This man was always an ironfisted dictator who didn't value human life or the lives of his subordinates", which is patently not true in canon. It was neither foreshadowed nor established that way in the show.
So why then is it considered true? Because the creators said so. Because it happened in canon, so it must be not only true, but also perfectly executed according to plan.
Example 2: "Adam was always planned to be an abusive ex" Let's go to another popular topic: Adam. Let's quickly recap the clues we were given about him up till his proper entrance at the end of Volume 3:
Black Trailer: He was shown to be a freedom fighter. He clearly didn't care at all about human lives, only about the Faunus, and was not afraid to kill or steal to do it.
Volume 2: Blake specifically calls him a mentor figure. We're meant to take her at her word because this was during a scene where Team RWBY were opening up to the others and candidly talking about their pasts and motivations. Earlier in the Volume, she draws a portrait of him in class, almost as if fondly remembering him, or at least a version of him she admired. This implies a strained/severed connection that Blake hopes can still be mended or redeemed in some way, not a traumatic relationship she wants to escape and want absolutely nothing to do with.
Volume 3, Cinder's flashback: Adam's Lieutenant volunteers to search for Blake after she defects, but Adam decides against it - not reluctantly, but very decisively - deciding to focus on his duties with the White Fang instead of Blake.
This is the canon evidence we were presented with by the show about Adam's character. From the very start, we know he's Blake's antagonist: someone who would kill humans to protect and elevate the Faunus. We can infer that Blake's defection is framed as a betrayal of the White Fang rather than Adam personally.
Come to his formal return in the end of V3 onwards, and we are instead presented with a different character: An abusive ex-lover, personally motivated by revenge against Blake for leaving him, with her defection from the White Fang being more of his justification to further hate her, but not the core reason.
Now, as a viewer, how are you supposed to process this contradicting information? Many fans consider this a blatant retcon: that Adam was suddenly rewritten with new motivations focused on Blake rather than the White Fang. However, a great many others believe that not only was Adam not out of character, but that this behaviour was secretly hidden and hinted at since the beginning.
In order to justify this shift in the character, there are several things you need to propose:

  1. That the information we were presented with about Adam was not meant to be taken at face value. The basic context was not enough; we needed the added layer of the "abusive ex-lover" in order to see all this information in its proper context. We were interpreting this information wrong; the fault is on the viewer for not connecting the pieces, instead of the creators for not placing those pieces properly.
  2. We are meant to think that Blake possibly still had feelings for Adam (otherwise she would not be drawing him in her sketchbook) and that she deliberately hid the fact from the rest of her team that Adam was her ex-lover, not her mentor.
  3. We need to then say that, instead of the more simple explanation that the writers simply changed his character mid-production, that this was instead a genius writing move by the writers to foreshadow this and feed us contradictory/incomplete information from the very beginning.
Why they are not, in fact, planned from the start These are just two examples, but you can see this argument constantly being used or implied by many fans for many different things in the show both large and minor, which boils down to "The writers had always planned this from the start".
I find this very hard to believe because based on my experience with RWBY and its writing, it is very clearly a story that is being written on the fly, with many details being changed with each new Volume. I know this because these inconsistencies are just as present in how RWBY writes everything else:
Evidence that RWBY's lore was not planned from the start
This also extends to how RWBY has handled the buildup to certain important plot points and characters:
Evidence that RWBY's buildup to important mysteries was not planned from the start
Why do fans think this way? RWBY has been a show that, for better or worse, grabbed the viewer because of the many mysteries it builds up and the moments that it hypes up. Who are the Faunus? What is Dust? What are the Grimm? Who was Summer Rose? What are the silver eyes? It sets these mysteries up, giving fans the expectation that it will give us a satisfying answer to these questions.
In fact, there have been enough things in RWBY that have been foreshadowed that fans are then (mistakenly, I believe) willing to go along that everything else is also planned to the same level of care and attention to detail. For example: Salem being the narrator at the start of the show, Ozpin pointing out Ruby's silver eyes in the first episode, etc.
The soundtrack also is responsible for a lot of this, as they imply events far in the characters' past and even futures, allowing for fans to speculate and theorise about the amazing things that they might see in the show. When citing that certain events and character arcs in RWBY have been foreshadowed, the songs are often used as evidence.
This has led to RWBY being a prime breeding ground for fan theories and headcanon, where any scrap of information or any vague detail given in the show can be used to justify any interpretation of a character or event, even if it is contradictory or poorly executed. Even worse when the creators of RWBY use this ambiguity to justify their own contradictions of the established story, using the bread crumbs they planted to mean whatever they decide it means at the current moment, and fans are expected to just take them at their word and treat it as truth.
The amount of people I've seen justify these clear writing mistakes is baffling. It's one thing to say "Eh, I just like it" or "I don't really care about that kind of thing"; it's another entirely to say "You're reading this information totally wrong" or "You just didn't pay attention to the little nuances in the story." Such justifications are so common and something that I've only really seen in the RWBY fandom; other shows would get a way with much, much less before its viewers would simply call BS on it.
But here's the problem. If RWBY cannot be consistent with its own lore, how can I expect it to be consistent about its characters and their motivations? Worse still, how can I make the leap and say that their characters have been brilliantly and subversively written, with years of foreshadowing masterfully planned from the start, if they cannot even keep Aura consistent from one Volume to the next?
Now, is there a problem with this inherently? Not really.
It's not wrong for a story to constantly update itself over time or to be written spontaneously. I am also aware that a lot of RWBY's problem's with giving us information on time has to do with its production and how short its episodes are. However, RWBY is a story that fans often love for its lore and its foreshadowing of important events and characters, and these are things that should not be written on the fly or changed at the last minute.
Conclusion To conclude, I'm not saying the writers are not allowed to make mistakes or change their mind about their writing. I am well aware that changes can happen in storytelling, with the story evolving as your own preferences change. I've retconned plenty of things in my stories before.
My problem is that a large part of the fandom is willing to defend these changes as not only justified, but to pretend these changes are in fact, not changes at all - we were simply too blind or weren't informed enough to see it. They are taking clear writing mistakes and elevating them to the level of genius that, quite honestly, the writing of RWBY clearly does not exhibit in its other aspects.
This is bad not only because it implicitly gives RWBY's creators permission to write lower-quality work, essentially saying "You can write the story in whatever way you want, we'll support it anyway", but also because it lowers the overall experience of enjoying RWBY. This sort of thinking promotes a very "Don't think about it too hard", "Just turn your brain off", "It's a fantasy show with made-up rules" mentality in the fandom and is a disservice to the world and story when so much discourse and fan content has been made around its rules and ideas.
It also does not help that the writers themselves do nothing to correct this attitude, and even have publicly double-downed on their decisions rather than clear up these misconceptions, only further incentivising this kind of mindset among their fans.
It's fine to love a story in spite of its flaws. I never loved RWBY because of its super intricate lore or brilliant writing. It is not fine, however, to take a story's flaws and call it strokes of genius. Doing so babies the writers to protect them from valid criticism, rewards them for not writing better stories, and trivialises the consistency of the story you care for.
What writers put in their stories are not right just because they say they are, and what they write in the story is not automatically good just because it is canon. You can still love everything else in the story or respect their work, but do also respect your own power as a reader to notice these mistakes and see them as what they are: mistakes. You don't have to stop loving RWBY just because it's less than what you hope it to be.
Because something can be canon and wrong at the same time, because writers are not perfect. So let's not pretend that they secretly are.

2021.10.28 02:38 xXxTHE_LAWxXx97 Bluetooth Audio Receiver App and a bug in windows related to the app

Bluetooth Audio Receiver App and a bug in windows related to the app I downloaded Bluetooth Audio Receiver from the Microsoft Store to connect my phone audio to my pc. I also use Voicemeeter to route my audio sources how I need. Voicemeeter does have a VBAN app to send audio over LAN however this option is not available on android yet.

Above is my Voicemeeter Dashboard, you can see the basic layout I'm shooting for.
Below is my Windows Volume Mixer dashboard. You can see that the default output device for my PC is "Voicemeeter VAIO3" which is the 3rd "Virtual Input" labeled at the top by Desk/Game. In the Volume Mixer dash you can see the app "Line" which has the output device set as "Voicemeeter Aux Input" which is the 2nd "Virtual Input" labeled at the top as Music.

For some reason the app refuses to actually change output. I have tested this by trying to send it to a different physical device (Desktop Speakers) and completely bypassing Voicemeeter all together but that doesn't work. Changing the Default Output Device will move the audio stream to whichever I select.
So long story short the device refuses to re-route through a different channel and will only use default device. Is there any way to fix this?

I noticed this most when attacking redcaps, which are like 219k power, and with my subordinate cities selected, it said I was 290k power (and every time it said I had a high chance of winning going into it). However, I lost every time (I’d say at least 8 attempts). And when I saw my troop marching, I didn’t see anything to indicate my subs actually helped. Any idea what’s going on?
